Chapter 8

Blair

“And here we have what seems like a hundred crates full of drugs. Wow, doesn’t daddy have a nice collection?” I coo to Matteo, then hear Porter, Griffin, and Maddox chuckle behind me. They’ve been in town a few days now, giving me the chance to get to know them. They’re all great guys. We're currently checking the inventory at one of Duke’s warehouses.

“Hey, I buy all the drugs and sell them to people outside the state. I’m trying to clean up my territory,” Duke protests, having heard my teasing words.

I grin at him, then glance at Matteo. “It’s okay. Daddy’s a good crime king.”

Duke drapes his arm over my shoulder and smiles at Matteo, mock whispering. “Your mom is a brat.” I stick my tongue out at him and mutter under my breath in Italian.

“I’m glad my woman isn't the only one who curses in another language,” Griffin chuckles.

“Well, having met you, it’s obvious she has good reasons,” I sass, making him smile.

Duke pulls me close to his side and sends a fake glare at his friend. “You heard from Luka?”

“Yeah, he’s more established now that Boris’s men have been completely flushed out, so he’ll start sending more shipments next month.” They talk business a bit longer while continuing to check the inventory. Leaving the building, I settle Matteo in his car seat as guys say bye, some off to see the other kings.

“Blair, it was very nice to meet you,” Porter says, then gives me a hug, as do the others.

“You are way too good for him,” Maddox calls out.

“I know,” I agree, then yelp when Duke slaps my ass.

“Mom is waiting, and she cooks a mean steak.” I kiss him, then let him know I’m starving. Holding my door open for me to get in the car, he runs around and gets in himself. When we’re driving he says, “I was thinking, you know my lawyer is drawing up the paperwork for us to officially adopt Matteo, so maybe he should get a marriage license, too.”

I freeze, unsure why I’m so shocked. “You want to get married?”

“More than anything in the world. And I would’ve waited, wanting to propose in a romantic way, but I’m guessing you haven't given much thought to your status here?”

I didn’t even think about that, at least not long-term, my only thought on getting Matteo here so he’d be safe. “Oh, you want to do it so I can stay.”

“Hey,” he says, grabbing my hand, “that’s just one of many reasons, the main being I love you.” Knowing Duke means it, I ask if I get to plan a wedding, making him laugh. “Do you honestly think my mom would let me get away without having one?” I giggle because he makes a very valid point, and as I turn to tell him that, I see an SUV coming toward ours at a high speed. I scream Duke’s name, knowing if he doesn’t do something it’ll T-bone us, but I don’t get the chance.
